Since the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, there have been many reasons proffered by scholars, practitioners, and policymakers to explain why the international community has been so ineffective at preventing genocide and mass atrocities. In this breakout, we will discuss some of the lessons learned from the atrocities prevention movement, what went right, what went wrong, and where we need to go from here. We will look at some of the new initiatives and strategies that are being discussed and implemented. We will also examine contemporary atrocities and the international responses and roadblocks to success.
